French court convicts man over synagogue attack

A court in northern France has sentenced a young neo-Nazi skinhead to six months in prison for scrawling a swastika and anti-Semitic graffiti on a synagogue, a judicial official said. The conviction in Lille is believed to be among the first related to an upsurge of anti-Semitic and anti-Muslim attacks in France that authorities say was prompted by the three-week war in the Gaza Strip. The defendant, who was not identified, was convicted Thursday and sentenced to a one-year prison term, six months of which were suspended, the...

German Jews Cut Contact with Catholic Church

Charlotte Knobloch, head of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, said on Thursday that she was severing contact with the Catholic Church. Her move stems from the pope's decision to void the excommunication of Holocaust denier Bishop Richard Williamson. Pope Benedict XVI these days is doing his best to calm waters roughened by his recent decision to bring Holocaust denier Bishop Richard Williamson back into the fold. At his Wednesday audience at the Vatican, Benedict went out of his way to express "full and indisputable...

Pope Benedict 'Is Sabotaging Christian-Jewish Dialogue'

The Vatican's decison to lift the excommunication of a bishop who denies that the Holocaust took place has angered Jews across the world. German papers on Monday argue that the pope is ruining decades of work aimed at improving relations between Jews and Catholics. Pope Benedict XVI insists that his only concern was that of eliminating a schism within the Catholic Church. But his decision to mend ties with the far-right Society of Saint Pius X (SPPX) by overturning the excommunication of four ultra-traditionalist bishops has...

(Eorope1)

Member states divided over condemning Israeli attacks

European Union member states are sharply divided over whether to condemn Israel for its bombing of UN schools and other buildings during its 23-day war on Gaza. Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Romania are opposed to condemning the shelling of UN Relief and Works Agency infrastructure and do not want the EU to call for an international investigation of alleged war crimes by both Israel and the Hamas governors of Gaza, according to sources close to discussions amongst EU diplomats. At the other end of the table, a coalition of five... [Lire la suite]
