Demjanjuk to be sentenced

A Munich court is about to deliver a verdict in the case of John Demjanjuk today. He is accused of having served as a Nazi death camp guard during World War Two, and the ruling Thursday could set a new precedent in German law. The defence says it will appeal if the ninty-one-year old is found guilty. The defence claim the judges already have their verdict and they don't listen to the defence arguements

Demjanjuk is also facing court action in the US. The Ukrainian born former auto worker is the lowest-ranking person to go on trial for Nazi crimes in World War Two

He is charged with 28,060 counts of accessory to murder for the number of people who died in the time span. He was allegedly a Sobibor camp guard and the theory is that if he was there, he was therefore a participant to the murders. This is the first time such a legal arguement has been made in German courts.

In the 1980s Demanjuk stood trial in Israel accused of being the guard "Ivan the terrible" at the Treblinka extermination camp. He was convicted and then freed when the Israeli Supreme court overturned the ruling saying the evidence showed he was a victim of mistaken identity.
