BUCHAREST, Romania - Officials say that 200 graves and 100 monuments have been vandalized in a Jewish cemetery in Bucharest. Paul Schwartz, a spokesman for the Romanian Jewish community, says it is the worst act of vandalism in recent times. He says the destruction was discovered early Thursday in the Jewish Cemetery in south Bucharest. Justice Minister Catalin Predoiu calls for an investigation. A ministry statement said: "The Justice Ministry firmly condemns all kinds of manifestations of this kind, as well as other anti-Semitic, xenophobic and racist acts." Police spokesman Christian Ciocan has confirmed the vandalism and investigation. There are some 6,000 mainly elderly Jews in Romania.
